1 Step Forward

1 Step Forward - Logo.png

At the Women’s Mosque of Canada we believe that violence against women is unacceptable. Violence cuts across every faith, culture and tradition.

According to our tradition (Islam), there is no example of women being mistreated by our Prophet nor do any of his teachings promote or present this as a way of life between a married couple. Partners are like “They are your garments and ye are their garments” [2:187 – The Holy Quran]. This implies love, affection and compassion between a couple, not oppression and violence.

The 1 step forward campaign ran from Nov. 1 – Dec. 6, 2019 and included a panel discussion that was hosted to mark the UN declared day for the “Elimination of Violence Against Women” on Nov. 29 2019.

What we accomplished:

We engaged local community leaders and survivors of violence, to speak to this issue of woman abuse and what it meant to our community. Its impact and the impermissibility of such behaviour within the faith.

We also highlighted key statistics on Gender-Based Violence in Canada.

We highlighted the alternative translation to verse 4:34 in the Sublime Quran, which is in greater alignment to the traditions and the ways of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Women are to be treated with honour, respect and dignity and there is no justification for the violence.
